Channel Deepening Project to create 80k jobs

The proposed project to deepen the Sabine-Neches Waterway from 40 to 48 feet is expected to create 78,484 new jobs in Jefferson County alone. Currently, the ship channel supports about 128,000 permanent jobs in the county. With the addition of these new jobs, the ship channel will support more than 200,000 jobs in Jefferson County once the project is complete.

The deepening project would also generate an additional $23 billion dollars in annual economic impact for Jefferson County, bringing the total economic impact of the ship channel to $36.5 billion dollars a year once the project is complete.

The waterway has not been improved since 1962 – more than 50 years ago. The proposed channel deepening project ensures this economic engine maintains its momentum and Jefferson County continues to enjoy the benefits.
